Blue Sage Studios
1218-C N. Western Ave.
Oklahoma City, OK 73106
405-601-2583

www.bluesagestudios.com

Blue Sage Studios is conveniently located just west of downtown Oklahoma City. Our facility is a large, two story building that houses Blue Sage Studios
(a glass blowing studio), Art Fusion
(a fused glass studio), and Istvan Gallery
(an art gallery). Any time we are working in the studio, folks are welcome to drop by and watch us work. We have bleachers and chairs set up for a comfortable environment that can accommodate groups of up to 40 people

Blue Sage Studios
is happy to schedule glass blowing demonstrations for families, tour groups
or the general public. There is never a charge for our demonstrations and we have a gallery space with our handmade glass art for sale. The Urban Art Gallery/Blue Sage Studios is a great place to have your next private party. Call us for more information or to schedule your next party, meeting, or event.

A typical evening in the glass studio consists of the "Gaffer" (that's the person blowing the glass) designing a piece, choosing color, preparing tools and then creating the work of art. Sometimes the artist will work alone but most of the time assistants are helping in the process. It may take forty‐five minutes to an hour and half to create a piece depending on the size and scope of the work. Over the course of an evening the artists at Blue Sage Studios will create several different glass pieces.

We also offer glassblowing lessons at Blue Sage Studios. If you are interested in learning how to blow glass or just want to give it try, give us a call to schedule a one-on-one lesson, or take one of our glassblowing classes through the Oklahoma City Museum of Art.

Like musicians, glassblowers are given the advice of "Don't quit your day job". As a result, the studio is typically open evenings and weekends, but with advance notice, we are able to schedule day tours without any problem.   If you would like to schedule a specific time to visit the Blue Sage Studios, please call 405.601.2583 or email Andy Boatman at andy@bluesagestudios.com.

Tulsa Furnace

Roy, Richard, and I headed to Tulsa last evening to help Sarah with the install of their new furnace. The Effective Heat Furnace is a beauty. It is nearly plug and play. I highly suggest one of these beauties for any glass studio. Granted I know Brent and we have been friends for several years and I own one of the early models of furnace. So in the interest of full disclosure I may be biased toward this furnace but receive no compensation for my endorsement of this system.

Tuesday, October 06, 2009

The Week Ahead

Well. We had furnace trouble last night during the charge. One of the braids that connects the elements to the electric started arching. It melted. Richard came in and we switched out the braid and in the process lost an element. Replaced it and broke another one. Midnight and we were up and running again. If you see Richard give him thanks.

:: Neal Stephenson ::

:: Neal Stephenson ::: "Writing novels is hard, and requires vast, unbroken slabs of time. Four quiet hours is a resource that I can put to good use. Two slabs of time, each two hours long, might add up to the same four hours, but are not nearly as productive as an unbroken four. If I know that I am going to be interrupted, I can't concentrate, and if I suspect that I might be interrupted, I can't do anything at all. Likewise, several consecutive days with four-hour time-slabs in them give me a stretch of time in which I can write a decent book chapter, but the same number of hours spread out across a few weeks, with interruptions in between them, are nearly useless."

I read this today via Merlin Mann. It is interesting. Maybe a bit like glass. It takes time. Making one piece once is not enough. Time to do and do again. To think and process and do and not have the other of life interfere. Makes good sense and puts to words something I had not been able to put to words.
Thanks.
Keep it centered!

The Week Ahead

Things are coming along at Blue Sage Studios. Zack and Michelle are in town for a few days. Hoping to finish up his wall flower installation. We plan on getting Brent's big annealher wired up and running too.
We got a new fan, it pulls 10,000 cfm of air. It seems to be helping not be so very hot. Thanks for Ray and Jim for the installation assist.
OKCMOA class on Saturday but the museum class was canceled for next week so we have some morning blow time slots available if you can come in and work.
The GAS conference is coming up soon in Portland. If you need any tools let Roy know and he may be able to pick something up for you.
Andy is heading out of town around the 24th. Roy and Richard will be the primary caretakers of the studio while I am out of town, Mara will be manning the phones. Scheduling may be a bit tight but everything should work out just fine.
More to come.
Keep it centered.
Andy
