New Photos

I am posting photos from the new Moto mobile phone to my Mr. Boatman's Room blog. I have chosen this avenue for the photos because not all my images, albeit most of them tho, will be glass related. So be sure to check out the other blog for lots of wonderous pics of hot glass, glassblowing, and completed works of art.
Thanks for watching and be sure to keep it centered.

Our Booth

I got a new Moto phone with a camera. I took a photo of our booth at the An Affair of the Heart show. The focus seems a bit off. I tried to send the image directly to the blogspot via the email posting feature but it did not work. I then sent the image to my gmail account and then to Picasa 2 to get it posted here. Amazing stuff this technology.

Lighting

We got some good lights from the home depot. Go to the one on Penn and Memorial. Great staff. Not as crowded. I like Lowe's as it is close by but the service is lacking as of late.
We put up the lights in the gallery. It is really looking outstanding.
Blowing this evening too.
We have set our Winter/Spring Schedule with the OKCMOA. If you are interested in taking a glassblowing class now is the time to contact the OKCMOA educational section to get on the waiting list or enroll in a class.

Weekend Schedule

We will be working on Friday in the studio just getting things together. Putting up shelving in the gallery. Making space in the torch room. Brent has been diligent in the running of wires for new lights and needs to be praised upon high.
Saturday is class day until 2 and then we will be going and blowing. Sunday will bring a final cleanup I hope and blowing around 2 or 3 for the evening.
I got a new receiver for our stero so music should be playing and hopefully speakers will be hung throughout the building for our listening pleasure. If you have not found Archive.Org you need to check out thier live music collections for download. It is a wonderous place full of awe.
Drop by the studio this weekend if you are out and about. Check out our progress and change.

Painting

We are in the middle of rewiring the studio. Many thanks to Ray who came out and helped us run new wire. It made it so much better having an extra hand. We also started painting the floor in the gallery. It will get a second coat tonight. I hope it comes out nicely.
Drop on by if you get the chance.

The Regatta

The Regatta show as a bit slow but we had a really good time. If you are around Oklahoma City and are looking for something you really need to check out this area of town. It is south of Reno on Lincoln (Byers). The city has really improved the riverfront. They said the bike trail goes all the way down to Meridian. If only Edmond would now follow suit.
We are working the next couple of weeks getting ready for the show An Affair of the Heart. It should be a really good one. Put it on your calendars now. http://www.aaoth.com/. It is the weekend of October 27th at the OKC Fairgrounds.

Dale

I just thought I would remind everyone to drop by the Oklahoma City Museum of Art and check out the Dale Chihuly exhibit. This is one that that has set OKC on the road to being one of the most excellent cities in America. We are striving to become something greater and we are completing tasks of a magnatude that is unmatched elsewhere. I really do love looking at the glass. The colors and forms and the lighting wow. They have done a most excellent job over at the museum. I like that word too. Museum. The Muse. Inspiration.

Changes

Well, we working diligently over the weekend on the studio. Things look mighty different now. We have the welding shed up. We took down the glass wall. We started moving things around. It is a completely different place. Over the next month more changes will be taking place but this weekend set the tone for things to come. Hopefully, pictures will be coming soon.
Thank you to everyone who has read about us in the Edmond Outlook. What a wonderful oppertunity.

Furnace Going Up

Brent changed out the coils last night and the furnace is getting hot again. Hopefully all will go well and we will have hot glass soon.
We started building out addition. We will have a welding shop attached to the barn. This is really going to open the space and allow more room for storage as well as a place to weld and create. I think the roof and sides will go up this weekend and a new garage door next week. Wiring and lighting are on the agenda too.
Great Progress is being made. I will try to get photos taken next week so everyone can see our progress.

Furnace Down Again

We have lost a coil in the furnace. It is going to take a day or two to cool and then we will have to change out the coils for a new set. I can hardly wait for a new furnace. It never breaks at a good time anyway. But then there is really never a good time.
Keep it hot.

Working for the Weekend

It was a nice weekend. I began my first OKCMOA glassblowing class of the Fall on Saturday it should be a great class. I am really looking forward to it over the next four weeks. I still have an open spot in this class. If you are interested in taking a glassblowing class you need to contact Chandra Boyd at the Oklahoma City Museum of Art and get enrolled. Brent starts a class on Wednesday.
Thank you to all our guests this weekend. We had several people stop by on Saturday. It is always a delight to have people come in and watch the glassblowing process. You can always pick out your colors, choose a shape and we will custom make an item of your choosing.

We are back in town and continue to be up and running in the studio. It seems cooler and the blowing is going well. We worked a bit on Monday night. We made some pumpkins for the up and coming fall season.
I went by Bella Forte today and took a look at Chris' annealehr. I am going to have to try to find a good sheet on how to program it. The ramping down is going to be the difficult part I think.

Summer Blowing

We are trying to get a summer schedule up and going. It seems to work well starting around 7:00 am and working until around 11 or so and then working again around 8:00 p.m. until around 11 at night. This way we avoid the heat of the day and folks can join us for blowing glass throughout the day. Afternoon's are reserved for naptime.

Here is a great photo of the glass and a bubble.  Posted by Hello

All is Well

Everything is up and running. Brent has installed five new fans in the roof. They pull out a lot of heat. It is really amazing.
The studio is running well. My brother came to town and brought some new (used) equipment. We now have a great granny hanger for the pipes to hang from when working alone along with a new yoke/heat shield combonation. Gotta come check it out.
My folks were in an accident last week and that has made things a little crazy. Mom is at Intgris Jim Thorpe Rehabilitation Center. She has a couple of fractures in her pelvis but is on the mend. Room 361 I think. Dad is doing alright. but their car is toast.
Call. Drop by. I think evening blowing is going to be the thing as well as early mornings. The heat of the day is a bit hot even with the new fans.
Keep it centered.

Update on the Studio

Greetings faithful readers. This is for Chris and I thought I would post it up for all to see instead of just an email.
We are in the process of ordering a new Mercury Relay. I burnt our old one up. We discovered we are pulling about 65 Amps in the furnace. It is designed to pull 45. Why then 65 you may ask. Well, I have only ever been running two coils in the furnace. It is designed for three. With three it pulls 45 with two it pulls 65 Amps.
We rewired the furnace from the breaker box with a new number 2 service entrance wire. It should take the load. We put on a new 70 Amp breaker. We put in a new number 2 wire coming into the furnace itself, plugging into the Mercury Relay. The relay was rated for 60 Amps. It burnt up.
Last night.
We switched out a relay from the annealher so we can blow today. Hopefully I can get a new relay overnighted one rated for 80 Amps.
I guess that is about all I know for now.
We did get to blow glass yesterday. It was great.
We will be showing our glass this weekend at the Acousticadia Festival on Arcadia Lake in Edmond. 15th Street Spring Creek Entrance. www.acousticadia.com
Stay in touch.

The Paseo Arts Festival

We are gearing up for the Paseo Arts Festival. It is coming up this weekend. I will try to get a 10% off coupon posted soon. If not make sure and tell Brent, Drew, Calley, or myself that you saw this post and would like to have 10% off any purchases.

Once Again in the Abyss

Well. Getting out to the studio on Friday night I see the breaker has blown. I flip it on and get the temp. back up on the furnace. At about 1750 degrees the breaker blows again. I have the wrong coils in the furnace. They are producing enough heat to get to 1750 but when more is needed the resistance drops and too much electricity flows and the breaker pops.
New coils on order. They should be here after this next weekend.
Speaking of weekends. The Paseo Arts Festival is coming up. I can't wait. It should be a great show. I hope to see everyone there.
Keep it centered.

Up and Running Again

Many thanks to all those people who came out over the past few days and weeks in an effort to get everything running again.
We replaced the crown to the furnace. I had wanted to wait a little longer but it just made sense to go ahead and do it now. We tore everything down and started over basically. We finished up last night at around 11:00. I took the day off just to get that furnace up and running again. I hope this is the right solution. I am confident everything is going to work out just right.
We should be going and blowing on Saturday. We should have hot glass on Friday night. Fingers crossed and all.
Thanks again.
Keep it centered.

Fixing

I am looking at the furnace tonight. i hope I can fix it so it will last a while longer. Fingers crossed.
I am going to try to get to Tulsa to get some refractory supplies. They have a bunch of stuff there aht can not be found else where.
Keep it centered.

The Saga Continues

The Furnace is down again. There are little points of mortor dabs to hold the coil in place. These dabs broke off on Saturday. Sometime during the night and coild moved forward and pulled off the shelf and broke and fell into the pot of glass. I got the coil out. We are letting the furnace cool now and hopefully Wednesday we will have it up and running once again.
It seems one thing leads to another. Problems compound and progress and fall into place just so it messes everything up.
Oh yes, I need about $70,000 to purchase everything we need for the next little while. Please let me know if you are interested in making an investment in a glass blowing studio.
Keep it centered.

Unscheduled downtime. If you are a blogger you may know something about this.
The furnace is up to temp again. It is now blowing the curcuit breaker. Up and Down, Up and Down, Up and Down we go when it gets fixed? Nobody Knows.

1000 Degrees

The furnace is at 1000 degrees again. We are working our way up there. It should be hot tonight so blowing should take place on Friday, Saturday for sure. I hope everything goes well this time with the new cement in place.
Dilima.
I am looking at getting a new furnace. The Denver is great. Economical, easy to use. It has drawbacks in the door and the elements burn out, hence our trouble as of late. I could get a new Denver and rebuild the one we have now and switch between them.
I am looking at the EZTherm by Henry Halem. It is a very nice furnace. It is like the Lexus of the glass blowing furnaces.
I am looking at the Moly furnace that Steve Stadelman builds too. More econimical then Henry's. More of the Cadilac of the furnaces.
We need to go electric for ease of use and consumption of electricity. Do we jump off the deep end and go expensive or keep it small and within reason?
The charging bull has two horns. We are back to this once again and always it seems.
Keep it centered.

Furnace Down

We are having more trouble with the furnace. I bought some high temp. cement from a guy in OKC. He sold me something with the assurance it was the right stuff. Needless to say it is not the right stuff. We got up to temp. and the cement just melted. We are trying to clean out this stuff now. I just hope this works.

Color Order in the Works

I am looking at making a color order today. There are so many beautiful colors available. I would like them all. It is unrealistic to get them all however. If you see a special color that grabs your eye let me know and I will be happy to order it too see how it comes out.
Scheduled to blow on Saturday. It looks like everything is going to be ready. Cleaned up in the studio a bit last night. We just need more space.

Edmond Show

It was a great weekend. Thank you all for coming by and making Blue Sage Studios a success. I would like to thank the judges for presenting us with Second Place in the festival. What a wonderful acknowledgement of our work.
Our Denver Furnace burnt out a coil over the weekend. I got it replaced last night so the furnace is heating up again. We should be on schedule to resume blowing on Saturday.

Edmond Arts Fair- April 30, 2005

Edmond Arts Fair- April 30, 2005
The Edmond Festival of the Arts was a success. Friday I was a bit concerned with the cold weather, I think it was colder on Friday then any day this past winter. Saturday turned off to be one of the most beautiful days in recent memory. The crowds were great. I think all of Edmond and half of Oklahoma City came out to the festival. Sunday was a great day too, cool and cloudy.
Three cheers for all the help provided by Angela, Jeremy,
Brent, Drew, Calley, and Abby Boatman. Without all of you Blue Sage Studios would not be what it is today. Many Thanks.

Blue Sage Studios - Glass Blowing

Blue Sage Studios - Glass Blowing
I am working on a new site layout. I was thinking the design was interfering with the ability of search engines to find the site. I am in the process of converting to a basic format and will work on changes in structure and navigation soon. Everything should be here just as it was before but lacking some interaction and whatnot. Hopefully the changes will be of benefit.

Bookmarks for Andrew Boatman

Bookmarks for Andrew Boatman I have created a new bookmarks page. It is coming along. I used Backflip to create the html code and uploaded it to my site. I would like to get descriptions for the sites but that is a lot of work. I would like to have a webpage I could update without having to go through dreamweaver and also could open it for submissions and changes by others. Keep me informed.

Run for the Arts

We had the Stillwater Run for the Arts this weekend. It was a beautiful place. Couch Park. Wonderful day. Crowds were a bit lite and we did not sell much glass. Edmond is coming up soon so we should be ready for it.
Keep it centered.

Everything is coming together.
Keep it centered.

Glass and Oklahoma

I believe that Oklahoma is on the cusp of something great. We have great weather, great people, great attractions, great cost of living. Granted we rank at the top of most social ills scales too but the offset of wonder is to great to ignore.
We need glass blowing studios in this state. We need the OKCMOA to receive a grant to build a full scale art glass facility in the city. We need Dale Chihuly or Randy Walker to come in and create a premiere place for glassblowing and learning the art of working with all mediums of glass. I could do this too with the right funding. If you have about a half of million dollars you are willing to invest in the future of this state give me a call.

KFOR - Glassblowing at Blue Sage Studios

Here is the Channel 4 story on the Blue Sage Studios and glassblowing. It is really a great spot. You will need a fast connection to view the video. Many thanks to Galen Culver for coming out and featuring the studio on his program.

Wednesday work

Brent should be out at the studio this evening. If you are interested in glassblowing classes Wednesday is a good evening for learning. Drop us a line if you get the chance.
We will be working Thursday around 5:00 p.m. Drop by the studio if you have the oppertunity.

I am trying the tags at technocrati. It looks like an interesting service.

Is this a great state or what

Tonight Blue Sage Studios was featured on Channel 4 is this a great state or what with Galen Culver. I have not see it but heard good things. I will try to find out if it will air again and let everyone know. The spot is not yet posted to the channel four web site but when it is I will post up a link.
Keep it centered.

New Week

It is a new week. We are blowing today around 4:00 or so. Looking forward to a good day. The Studio is coming together. We are starting to get a good stock of glass for up coming art shows. The Run for the Arts in Stillwater will be our first Spring show.
Wichita was great. Chris was able to get a great deal on a furnace. I am looking forward to seeing it up and running. This should be a good week. Have fun.
Keep it centered.

Wichita

We are heading up to Wichita on Thursday around 5:00 am. Chris, Drew and I are going to look at a furnace for Chris, some blowpipes, a diamond marver, and various tools. Secondary to the trip, and the reason to go so early, is to head over to Rollin Karg's place to watch them work. I still can't find a link to his website. I am looking forward to the trip and all the things that lie in store.
I am not sure if we will be back for blowing on Thursday night yet or not. Be sure to call if you are planning on heading out to the studio to check and see.
Keep it centered.

Glass Blowing on Tuesday

We are blowing on Tuesday around noon at the studio. Wednesday about the same. Come on by and see what we have been up too. We made a bunch of oil lamps yesterday and ornaments too. Today and wednesday we will probably focus on vases, bud vases, hummingbird feeders?, and more.
Thursday we are heading to Wichita for the day. Rollin Karg has some good stuff going on and we are going to check out what they are making. I can't find a link on their website.
Friday blowing in the morning, taking Saturday off and back for Sunday evening.

Spring Break

At the Blue Sage Studios glass blowing will continue during Spring Break. Whereas I thought I would be going to Santa Fe, NM for the break I have decided not to take that trip. We will be working in the studio most of the break. I look forward to see everyone. Drop by and watch. Call and make a time and we can fire it up just for you too. I hope everyone has a good one.
Keep it centered.
If you get the chance go see the Dale Chihuly glass exhibition over at the Oklahoma City Museum of Art. It can change your life and the way you see the world. Sort of a Suessian kind of experience.

Thursday Blowing

We should be out there working on Thursday around 4:00 or so. Brent has to work at 501 Cafe that evening but Drew, Cali, maybe Chris and I will be working right along.

Tuesday, March 08, 2005

Spring Break

We are looking at the schedule for Spring Break next week. It looks like Brent will be working during the day some. Very few evenings next week. I will get more details out in the next couple of days.
We blew Christmas Oranaments last night and some new oil lamps. Brent, Cali and I filled up one annealher with those and the other about half full with vases. It was a great night.
Brent will be out over the next couple of days and I will be blowing on Thursday evening. We may be working on Friday after school to but I am not sure yet.
Keep it centered.

Blowing Tonight

We will be working this evening in the studio. It looks to be a great day for hot glass work. We are working on vases and bowls right now. Brent blew a lot of Christmas Ornaments on Wednesday. We should have a good stock of c-balls for shows this summer so everyone can get an advance move on the holiday season.
Zack is in town this weekend and we will be working some on Friday and Saturday and Sunday if all goes well. Come on by but you may want to call first. 405-473-0754.
Keep it centered.

Brent Jacking

Another one of Brent and Chris. Brent is jacking the neck line of his glass. The jack line allows the glass to break off the blowpipe with relative ease. Posted by Hello

The New Pipe Warmer

This is the new pipe warmer Brent built. You have to heat the blowpipes and punties in order for the glass to stick. This pipe warmer allows for good control of the propane but also has forced air to create extra heat. Very cool, or should I say hot. Posted by Hello

Blowing Glass

Here is a photo of Brent working with Chris in the background and Cali too. Posted by Hello

Monday Night

We were blowing glass last night when Angela called. She was bringing home pizza and wings from 2 Brothers Pizza in Arcadia. We went up and ate and then back to blowing and in about 15 minutes walks Chris and he has two pizzas from his place Italian Jim's in Yukon. Good night for Pizza.
Brent is working on a new series of pieces. Beautiful colors. I will try to get a photo soon. Speaking of photos...

Galleries in Oklahoma

We are looking for places to show our art work. We need to find some galleries around Oklahoma interested in having blown glass on display. All the better it is "Made in Oklahoma". If you are a gallery or know someone who would be interested in selling handmade glass from the good people at Blue Sage Studios please drop me a line.
We had a great weekend of blowing. Several good pieces came out. We got some new colors in and they look to be beautiful.
We do need more milk bottles. If you drink Promised Land milk please save the bottles for us. It is sold at Albertsons and Wal-Mart Neighborhood Market. I would be pleased to subsidize your milk drinking if you save us the cool glass bottles.
Stay in touch. Keep it centered.

Great Night

It was a great evening. Thank you to everyone who dropped by the studio. We got to blow a little glass and chat and Angela did bring in a great salad from Lottinvilles.
It was a come and go evening. I don't think we really go a lot of glass made and put away in the annealher but we did have a great time. Everyone got to meet Jet and Myrna and they are heading back up to Seattle today. I really do want to visit them up there soon. Hang out. Go to the B&O Espresso. Visit glass studios. Reconnect.
I would like to hang out at Chico's Art Glass and Cunningham's studio again. I loved being at the 5th street Hot Glass Studio and want to visit there. Trubey likes a place in Pioneer Sq. I will have to find the name of it again.
I will be heading to Santa Fe for Spring Break and checking out the studios there. More details to come.
Keep it centered.

Blog Oklahoma

I joined the blog Oklahoma webring for bloggers in the great state of Oklahoma. I think we need to promote Oklahoma as a state and as a place to be. The blog oklahoma may be a good place to get our collective online selves noticed.

Brent finished working on the pipe warmer. I will get a photo posted soon. It is really very cool. I am not sure what the next project will be but great strides are being made in the studio.

Keep it centered.

Going and Blowing

We will be working out at the studio blowing glass on Thursday around 3:30 or so. Brent has been busy getting this torn apart and built again. He has been working on a pipe warmer and it should be ready to go for Thursday too. I am looking forward to working. Drop on by if you get the chance.
Summer classes are being scheduled for glass blowing classes through the Oklahoma City Museum of Art. We will have two classes in June. It just gets too hot in July and August. We will have Fall classes again too.
Keep it centered.

Spinning Platters

We have been making a set of dining plates for my buddy Jeff Bakel. They are coming along. It is difficult to get a good spin. The bottoms of the plates tend to curve a bit. They are really fun to make and improvement keeps coming. On Monday I broke two of them. Last night I think I had three survive.
OKCMOA class starts on Saturday and we will be blowing after 2:00.
James B. came out last night too. Kudos to James. Brent's student Cali came out too. I love it when the shop is full and running smoothly.

Website Updates

I have been looking at HTML validators. Seeing the need to have cleaner script I have been making changes to the Blue Sage Studios glass blowing web site. It is coming along nicely. I had a few errors and some 501 issues that needed work. I do not think you will notice much change in the site itself visually but the behind the scenes action is much better. I also need to use more key words in my text. Things like glassblowing and whatnot throughout the site in order to help be found easier on searches.
Changes are coming along nicely with the studio. I will try to get some photos this weekend and post up some of our improvements. Brent almost has the vent hood completed for the torch room and with the addition of a couple of more small torches in the near future we will be able to handle several folks working at the same time.
We are planning on building a new annealehr (the oven). Brent just needs a taller one and also when spinning out platters we need a wider space with shelves for multiple objects. We are also wanting to get our new glory hole built. I need to get the front cut off of the drum we have and order the fiber and bricks and burner.
Keep it centered.

Working Diligently

I broke three pieces on Monday. It has been a long while since I lost that many. I think I am attaching the punty on too hot. I need to make some adjustment but I have not figured out what I was doing wrong yet.
We made several plates yesterday. It was a very good day all in all.
Should be working next on Thursday around 3:30 or so.
My new class starts on Saturday at the OKCMOA.
Keep it centered.

Monday, February 07, 2005

Monday

Today we will be working at the studio from 3:30 or so until around 8:00. Feel free to drop by if you get the chance. It should be a nice day for glassblowing. I think we will probably do some oil lamps and vases and try to spin out some platters too. I would like to make a few hearts for Valentines too.

Friday, February 04, 2005

Weekend Schedule

We will be working on Saturday around 2:00 p.m. I have class on Saturday morning at 10:00 until 2:00. Channel 4 may come out and do a piece on teaching glass blowing for the "Is this a great state or what" program. It could be really cool.
Sunday we will be working from 2:00 until around 7:00.
Feel free to drop by if you get the chance.
Keep it centered.

Classes

We do offer classes in glass blowing. Currently our main offering is through the Oklahoma City Museum of Art. This is a five week class with four people in a class. We offer an introduction class and an intermediate class too. This class fills up very quickly. We are working on the Summer schedule and it should be ready around mid-March. Keep an eye out at the OKCMOA website.
We do offer one-on-one glass blowing classes on a limited basis. Please let us know if you are interested. Monday and Wednesday evenings and some weekdays are available for these individual lessons.
We are scheduling Flameworking classes too. Brent will be teaching flameworking (bead making) classes for interested parties. If you are interested in taking a bead making class let us know. Perhaps you and a small group of friends are looking for a fun party activity. This would be a great opportunity to get together and learn something new.

Entry One

I wanted to start a new blog just for the studio. I think it will be a good thing.
What can you expect to find here?
New postings for events at Blue Sage Studios. New art glass produced by the studio. Class schedules. Musings on glass blowing. And much more.

Blue Sage Studios is a glass blowing studio near Lake Arcadia in Edmond, Oklahoma. We offer glass blowing lessons, flameworking (beadmaking) classes, and art glass for sale.
